The Ombudsperson Shared Lithuania’s Experience at an International Event in Italy

On November 6–7, 2024, the event “Share Science, Shape Future: Scientific Advice in Europe – Analysis, Synergies and Perspectives” took place at the headquarters of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Rome, focusing on the analysis and strengthening of synergies within Europe’s science-policy ecosystem.

The event began with an introductory session where the intersections of EU research and policy were discussed, and the findings of an expert group conducting the interim evaluation of the “Horizon Europe” program were presented. Representatives of European academic and advisory institutions participated in the discussions, including Dr. Reda Cimmperman, the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures of the Republic of Lithuania and Dr. Vaiva Priudokienė, Deputy Chair of the Research Council of Lithuania.

Discussions during the event covered the differences among European countries’ science-policy systems, the potential for AI usage within research institutions, as well as challenges and opportunities for collaboration. The connections between academic ethics, research, and policy, which are crucial to EU competitiveness and innovation, were also evaluated.

Additionally, the Ombudsperson had the opportunity to meet with Lithuania’s Ambassador to Italy, Dalia Kreiviene, to discuss prospects for further collaboration.

The Ombudsperson’s participation in this international event provided an opportunity to showcase the activities of Lithuania’s Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures and to establish cooperative ties with policymakers in research and innovation across Europe.
