Representatives of the Committees of Academic Ethics participated in the interactive training “Virtues and Morals in the Academic Environment”

On the initiative of the Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures, the training “Virtues and Morals in the Academic Environment” were held on the 7th of April. The training was organised under the programme Virtue based ethics and Integrity of Research: Train-the-Trainer program for Upholding the principles and practices of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (VIRT2UE Train the Trainer) funded from the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation “Horizon 2020”. 18 representatives of the committees of academic ethics from different Lithuanian research and higher education institutions took part in the training.

The training was started and the introduction was made by the coordinator of VIRT2UE Train the Trainer programme, Dr. Signe Mezinska from the University of Latvia. The first part of the interactive training was used to discuss the dilemmas of academic ethics and related violations of academic ethics, what research principles established in the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity are the most relevant for choosing some behaviour, and what virtues of the researchers help them to avoid violations of academic ethics. The attendees discussed the meaning of a good researcher and the typologies of the good that the researcher has to satisfy to be a good researcher in the second part of the training. In the third part, the attendees simulated the hypothetic situation and reasons different behavioural positions in the mode of debates and dialogue.

The training was conducted by the Head of the Lithuanian Bioethics Committee, Dr. Asta Čekanauskaitė, and the Senior Specialist (Senior Analyst) of the Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures, Dr. Eglė Ozolinčiūtė.
