Ombudswoman Dr. Reda Cimmperman Participates in IGLO OPEN Event on Science and Artificial Intelligence

On October 23, 2024, a significant IGLO OPEN event was held in Brussels, organized by the LINO Office, focusing on the role of AI in modern science. The theme, “Navigating AI: Guidelines and Insights for Research,” attracted considerable attention as AI’s impact on science continues to grow in importance.

At the beginning of the event, Head of the LINO Office, Tadas Tumėnas, welcomed the participants. Following this, David Arranz, Policy Officer at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, presented “Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research,” emphasizing the need for collaboration among researchers, publishers, and conference organizers to ensure transparency and reliability in research. His talk highlighted the importance of a unified EU approach to AI use.

Dr. Cimmperman, Ombudswoman for Academic Ethics and Procedures, introduced “Guidelines for the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education and Research”, focusing on the ethical principles necessary for AI technology application in these fields. She shared key insights from Lithuania’s experience in this area.

After the presentations, participants engaged in discussions on AI ethics, its impact on research quality, and transparency. This event provided an excellent platform for participants from various countries to discuss current issues in AI applications and share insights on the ethical use of this technology.

IGLO is an informal association of non-profit R&D liaison offices in Brussels. Its mission is to facilitate interactions among IGLO members, national research systems, and European institutions, promoting information sharing and collaboration, especially on EU Framework Programme issues.

The LINO Office, Lithuania’s Research Liaison Office in Brussels, is part of the Lithuanian Research Council. Its mission is to support Lithuanian researchers in fostering international collaborations and participating successfully in European Commission funding programs, working closely with EU institutions and potential partners in research and innovation.
