Meeting with the Lithuanian Society of Young Researchers: Focus on Doctoral Challenges and Strengthening Academic Ethics

On 19 May, the Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures of the Republic of Lithuania held a meeting with representatives of the Lithuanian Society of Young Researchers (Lietuvos jaunųjų mokslininkų sąjunga, LJMS). This meaningful exchange provided both institutions with an opportunity to discuss the most pressing issues faced by young researchers, particularly doctoral candidates and other members of the academic community, throughout their studies, research, and professional development.

The conversation focused on key challenges in the academic environment, including transparency, accountability, adherence to ethical standards, and communication with institutions. LJMS representatives shared their insights on the common difficulties doctoral students encounter, such as unclear information about ethical procedures and reluctance to raise concerns.

The Office emphasized that it is open to all members of the academic community and that it is especially important for young researchers to know they can and should seek help when they have questions about academic ethics, its implementation, or potential violations. Such consultations can be valuable not only for resolving specific cases but also for preventing future issues.

The meeting also covered potential joint initiatives, including educational activities, training sessions, outreach efforts, and collaboration on recommendations tailored for early-career researchers. This cooperation is expected to contribute to the creation of an academic environment grounded in ethics, openness, and mutual respect.

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures reminds all doctoral candidates and members of the academic community that they are welcome to reach out by email at info@etikostarnyba.lt or by phone at +370 694 43 992.
