European Science, Technology, and Innovation Councils Meeting in Riga: The Use of AI in Science

On May 8–9, the European Science, Technology, and Innovation Councils meeting took place in Riga, attended by the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures of the Republic of Lithuania, Dr. Reda Cimmperman. During the event, she delivered a presentation titled “The Role and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Science and Research”, emphasizing: “The use of artificial intelligence in scientific activities must be based on transparency, accountability, and human rights. It is essential to ensure that AI tools do not violate intellectual property rights, are safe, and comply with EU and national legislation.”

This statement reflects the main ideas of the presentation on the application of artificial intelligence in scientific work, with a particular focus on transparency and accountability.

The meeting was opened by Lauma Muižniece, Director of the Latvian Council of Science, who stressed that innovations should not contradict research ethics, and the integration of artificial intelligence must be based on reliability, transparency, and human responsibility.

The event brought together 34 representatives from 15 countries who shared experiences and strengthened cooperation in the field of science governance. The discussions centered around the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research, its impact on work processes, and the assurance of scientific ethics.

During the meeting, the results of a survey conducted by the Latvian Council of Science were presented. The findings revealed that 61% of project managers and 43% of experts in Latvia already use AI tools in their work, with the majority acknowledging that AI partly facilitates their tasks.

At the European level, this issue is also gaining importance. On May 22–23, the EU Competitiveness Council plans to approve the “EU Strategy for the Use of AI in Science”, which emphasizes interdisciplinary cooperation, the development of digital skills, access to high-performance computing, and the ethical use of AI in research.

We thank the organizers for the professional coordination of the event and the productive discussions!
