The Office’s representatives visited the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity, TENK

On 25-27 October, the representatives of the Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures visited the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity, TENK. During the work visit, the Office’s employees took part in the interinstitutional exchange of knowledge and experience: they took interest how TENK is forming the research integrity provisions in Finland and implement the preventive measures of unethical behaviour (for example, through consultations, training organisation, preparation of guidelines) and looked deeper into the peculiarities of examination of possible violations of academic ethics. The knowledge and experience of the Office’s representatives will help to improve the complaint handling procedures in the Office and implementation of preventive measures of unethical behaviour in Lithuania.

Besides, the meetings with the secretary of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and scientific advisor of project SOFI, Dr. Jaakko Kuosmanen, were held. He explained how the Finnish scientists are involved into the policy formation to make evidence-based strategic decisions. Meanwhile, Dr. Päivi Tikka, Director of Division of Strategic Research at Academy of Finland that is financing research, shared the practice of financing of strategic research. Research advisor and coordinator of research integrity at Academy of Finland, Dr. Päivi Lindfors told in more detail how the researchers are encouraged to comply with the norms of academic ethics, while carrying out the research projects financed by the Academy of Finland. She mentioned that the Academy of Finland applies restriction of 3 years to submit the research applications for the researchers, who have been declared guilty of violations of academic ethics.
