The Office employees participated in the conference “Ethics Arena 2024: AI and Research Ethics”

On October 4, 2024, the Office employees participated in the conference “Ethics Arena 2024: AI and Research Ethics” organized by the Swedish Research Council. The event discussed the challenges posed by ChatGPT in everyday life as well as in the fields of science and research. Key topics raised by the speakers included trust, control, values, and fairness. Stanley Greenstein (Stockholm University) questioned whether “is it ethically right to rely on a technology that cannot be explained?” Marinela Garcia Lozano (Swedish Defence Research Agency) highlighted the importance of accuracy in technology, especially when human lives are taken in mind or when decisions need to be made within seconds based on AI-generated data. Jessica Nihlén Fahlquist from Uppsala University emphasized that research with “ethics committee approval” does not necessary mean that research is “ethically unproblematic” itself or accepted by research participants themselves. Pontus Strimling (Linköping University) provided calculations on how ChatGPT’s decisions align with expert assessments in evaluating grant applications. The date for next year’s conference has been announced as October 2, 2025.

A full recording of the conference will be available for viewing in a few weeks.
