SMK University of Applied Social Sciences students discuss academic ethics

On 14 April, the staff of the Office participated in a meeting with students and lecturers from the SMK University of Applied Social Sciences. During the meeting, the Senior Specialist (Senior Analyst) of the Office, Dr Eglė Ozolinčiūtė shared tips on how to avoid image plagiarism: how to find, select and properly cite the visual material used. Students were interested in how to cite images and tables from books, whether separate permissions should be obtained when you want to use not only the names of companies but also their products (e.g., videos), whether and how to cite works by other authors that inspire a new work etc. The discussion also raised other issues related to the application of the Law on Copyright and Related Rights of the Republic of Lithuania.

During the meeting, the Senior Specialist (Senior Analyst) of the Office, Dr Julija Umbrasaitė presented the Office’s 2021 study “The Supply of Contract Cheating Services in Lithuania”: methodological approach, results and recommendations and their implementation. The participants also discussed the risks of such unethical practices as identified in the literature and the possible negative consequences for students and society. The meeting discussed the possible consequences under Article 123 of the Code of Administrative Transgressions of the Republic of Lithuania. Participants were interested in the procedure for handling complaints about administrative transgressions and statistics.

More than 30 members of the SMK University of Applied Social Sciences community attended the meeting.
