Academic Integrity Worldwide: Highlights from the GAIN Meeting

On 10 September, the Global Academic Integrity Network (GAIN) meeting took place, bringing together representatives from institutions across the world. The aim of the network is to strengthen academic integrity, transparency, and quality in higher education. The meeting was coordinated by Simone Via, representative of ANVUR (Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes). Our Office was represented by Dr. Eglė Ozolinčiūtė, Senior Analyst.

New Network Members

At the beginning of the event, new members were welcomed:

  • NCQAA – National Committee for Qualifications and Academic Accreditation (Qatar),

  • AEQES – Higher Education Quality Assessment Agency (Belgium),

  • ANQA – National Center for Professional Education Quality Assurance (Armenia),

  • CSCSE – Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (China).

Key Insights

The meeting featured several topical presentations. Dr. Shivadas Sivasubramaniam (Roehampton University, UK) spoke about preparing students for workplaces where artificial intelligence (AI) is widely used. He emphasized the importance of encouraging responsible AI use during studies, while restricting functions such as essay writing. Roehampton University has developed an internal system that evaluates AI use on a five-level scale.

Veronika Krásničan, Executive Director of ENAI, presented the network’s activities and resources, inviting participants to join ENAI as institutional or individual members. She also encouraged the use of ENAI resources, participation in conferences across Europe and beyond, as well as in ENAI summer schools for doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s students.

Members’ Experiences

GAIN members also shared their latest updates:

  • CIMEA introduced the Education Fraud Prevention and Control Center – a tool designed to strengthen Europe’s response to education fraud and promote academic integrity.

  • TEQSA representatives from Australia reported that advertising for essay-writing services has been banned in the country for five years, and websites offering such services are blocked. In total, more than 500 websites have been taken down.

This meeting once again demonstrated that academic integrity is a shared global commitment, strengthened through cooperation and the exchange of experiences.
