The Office reviewed changes in the regulation of the activities of academic ethics committees

In 2019–2020, the Office initiated the review of the Recommendations for adoption, implementation, and supervision of academic ethics codes of research and higher education institutions (HEIs) published in 2015 and of the documents regulating the activities of academic ethics committees, approved by HEIs, and provided the academic community with the research review “Changes in Regulation of Activities of Academic Ethics Committees of Lithuanian Research and Higher Education Institutions”. The aim of the study is to evaluate the completeness of the regulation of the activities of academic ethics committees of HEIs as well as the conditions for implementation of the principles of transparency and objectivity.

The content analysis of the documents revealed that most HEIs while developing their documents regulating activities of academic ethics committees tend to consider, at least in part or in an interpretative way, the Office’s recommendations for implementation of the above-mentioned principles. According to the theory of Robert Merton (1968), the majority of HEIs can be attributed to a conformist or innovative type of behavior.
