The Office invited doctoral students to discuss on academic ethics

On the 25th of September, the Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures participated in the science festival “Researchers’ Night”. The event of the Office was aimed at doctoral students from various fields of science. They were invited to discuss on academic ethics. The participants from six research and higher education institutions saw a short performance “Winds of Change” staging common mistakes and behavioural patterns of academic ethics, causing various dilemmas in the daily life of researchers.

After the short performance, the participants discussed what major mistakes and breaches of academic ethics could be observed in the performance, what patterns of behaviour they recognized in their academic environment, what changes are most needed in the field of academic ethics, and how to initiate them at various levels.

The participants hypothetically simulated how their institutions would behave in the discussed cases, identified problems of doctoral supervision, and made suggestions on how malpractices could be replaced with constructive practices that implement an academically honest culture.
